Bone densitometry

Bone densitometry scanning, also called bone scan, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone mineral density. Bone densitometry is a modality that uses low dose x-rays. This service at the Orléans Health Hub offers analysis for the hip and spine.

For referring physicians: To refer a patient to the Orléans Health Hub's medical imaging services, you may use the Ocean eReferral Network portal. Paper requests are also accepted.

Do not take vitamins nor iron or calcium supplements on the day of the exam.
Register at room 1I401, 30 minutes before your exam. If you arrive late, your appointment may be rescheduled.

A medical radiation technologist completes the examination. The person sits on a table below the x-ray machine and the machine moves as the examination proceeds. The person must remain still to ensure the stability and accuracy of the images.

The examination lasts 30 minutes.

Once the exam is completed, no follow-up is necessary. You can take your vitamins and supplements as usual. The radiologist will interpret the results which will be sent to the referring physician and your family physician. The results will not be available on the patient portal.
