The Borderline Personality Disorder Clinic provides specialized treatment for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 with a diagnosis of borderline personality traits or disorder (BPD). Based on a stepwise model of care that has as its goals the teaching, integration and generalization of various skills that will enable patients to manage the emotional, interpersonal, cognitive and behavioral effects of BPD.
Emotions Management Group
The first level is a prerequisite for the second and involves learning different skills from behavioural-dialectical therapy (DBT). This psycho-educational group consists of a weekly three-hour session. It lasts for 12 weeks.
The second level is accessible according to more precise selection criteria. It is based on mentalization therapy and focuses more on relational dynamics. This psychotherapeutic group includes a three-hour group session each week, as well as a one-hour individual psychotherapy session. It lasts approximately six months. Psychiatric consultations are also available as needed.
The first level is a prerequisite for the second. It is the Emotion Management Groups. This 12-week program includes a weekly three-hour group session. For some people, this stage of treatment is enough and fully meets their therapeutic needs.
Emotion Management Group
This level of service is offered in English and French at both Montfort Hospital and Carrefour Santé Orléans.
This psycho-educational group provides an accessible conceptualization of the difficulties encountered in borderline personality disorder and allows patients to become familiar with the concepts of acceptance, tolerance and understanding of intense and labile emotions. In addition, it includes the learning of different skills from the behavioural-dialectical therapy (DBT).
The second level is available according to more specific selection criteria. Two treatment options are available: the mentalization group and the behavioral-dialectical therapy group. Each offers a three-hour group psychotherapy session and a one-hour individual session on a weekly basis. These services last approximately six months. Psychiatric consultations are also available as needed. For eligible patients, the choice of treatment will be determined according to their needs.
This group is, for the moment, only offered in French at Hôpital Montfort.
This psychotherapeutic group is based on the Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) developed by Anthony Bateman and Peter Fonagy and focuses more on problematic relationship dynamics by understanding our reactions, and those of others, in terms of intentions and mental states.
Behavioral-Dialectical Therapy Group
Service will be available in 2022.
This group is offered in French and English at the Orléans Health Hub.
This psychotherapeutic group is based on the Behavioural-Dialectical Therapy (BDT) model developed by Marsha Linehan and focuses on the acceptance-change balance. It deepens the skills learned in the previous level and includes more. The following four modules are presented: distress tolerance, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation.
